Authorities have reported a number of Rotavirus infections not seen in the past eight years.
The infection season has impacted the region extremely intensely. Many cases of temporary disability have been caused by the highly contagious Rotavirus, the presence of which is currently increasing rapidly. The Bavarian State Office for Health and Food Safety (LGL) in Erlangen has already recorded approximately 4,000 registered cases in 2025. Consequently, morbidity rates have reached a level not observed in a long time. The last time a similar figure was recorded was in 2017, when the number of cases reached nearly 4,400.

The increase in rates has been particularly noticeable in Eastern Bavaria. In the Cham district office, an increase in cases among infants and young children was registered last week. However, a spokesperson for the health authority gave a cautious, encouraging forecast, noting that, according to current assessment, these are independent cases. “A specific reason for the temporary cluster of cases cannot be unequivocally named at this time,” he explained. Specialists at the office emphasized that the number of Rotavirus infections, like Norovirus, is subject to natural fluctuations over many years.
Symptoms and Risks
The symptoms of the infection appear acutely: severe vomiting and diarrhea occur. While adults usually recover from the illness within a few days, extreme vigilance is required when infants and small children fall ill. Due to low body weight, significant loss of fluids and salts quickly leads to critical dehydration. For this reason, young patients frequently require inpatient hospital treatment to stabilize the body’s condition.
Prevention and Hygiene
Preventive protection is provided by oral vaccination, which has been officially recommended for infants since 2013. However, this option is not utilized universally. According to data from the office, only 63 percent of children born in 2023 in Bavaria were fully vaccinated against Rotavirus.
To break the chain of infection in daily life, medical professionals recommend strictly following hygiene rules. Thorough hand washing with soap and water is considered the most effective protective measure, especially after using the toilet, before eating, and during food preparation.
