Human Remains Discovered in Remote Cave Near Oberstdorf

Mysterious human bones found in a secluded cave near Oberstdorf have prompted a forensic investigation, as authorities work to determine the origin and age of the remains. Initial assessments suggest they may have been undisturbed for decades.

Last Sunday, a caver exploring the remote Lochbachtal valley near Oberstdorf in the Allgäu region accessed a difficult-to-reach cave through a narrow rock crevice. Inside, he discovered human bones, including parts of a skull. It remains unclear how long the remains have been there, the person’s identity, gender or time of death. These details are now subject to forensic analysis. The Alpine Police Unit secured the site and recovered the remains for further examination.

Experts suspect the bones may be several decades old

According to current findings by investigators, the bones may have been lying in the cave for many years, possibly even several decades. Police spokesman Christian Lindstedt explained: “We cannot date them precisely yet, but the condition of the bones suggests they have been there for quite some time.” He ruled out the possibility of a prehistoric origin: “We assume a timeframe of decades, not centuries. There is no indication that the remains belong to early humans.”

No signs of foul play detected at the site

Authorities found no other items at the scene, such as clothing or personal belongings like a backpack. The remains have since been transferred to forensic scientists, who will attempt to determine the sex of the individual, the likely time of death, and how long the bones have been in the cave. Investigators are also hoping to cross-reference the findings with existing missing persons records. According to police, there is currently no evidence suggesting a violent crime.
