Historic Victory: Bayern Women Celebrate Double and Most Successful Season in Club History

The FC Bayern Munich women’s football team capped off an exceptional season by winning the DFB Cup. After securing their third consecutive league title, they triumphed in the final against SV Werder Bremen with a 4-2 victory, marking the first Double in the club's history.

National striker Lea Schüller was the standout player of the match, scoring a hat-trick.

For head coach Alexander Straus, who is leaving the club at the end of the season to move to Los Angeles, the farewell could not have gone better. In the final at the Müngersdorfer Stadium in Cologne, his team defeated their league rivals Bremen 4-2 (2-1). Schüller’s three goals made her the matchwinner.

Early lead despite Bremen’s determined performance

From the start, the usual power dynamic between the two teams became apparent. SV Werder Bremen had never won a competitive match against FC Bayern. Nevertheless, the team from Bremen showed great fighting spirit and tried to stand up to the favorites. Bayern’s superiority became clear in the 6th minute: Giulia Gwinn made an energetic run down the right wing and, despite a sharp angle, struck the woodwork. Schüller then headed the rebound into the net, giving Bayern the early lead.

Simon extends Bayern’s lead – Bayern takes command

Despite some lapses in concentration, Bayern extended their lead methodically. In the 17th minute, Schüller missed a chance to double the score when Bremen’s goalkeeper Livia Peng made a great save. About 30 minutes into the match, Bayern struck again: Jovana Damnjanović made a precise pass to Klara Bühl, who raced to the goal line and set up the unmarked Carolin Simon. From close range, Simon made it 2-0. Bremen’s defensive structure began to weaken, and their attacking efforts became increasingly ineffective.

Bremen scores for the first time in years against Bayern

In stoppage time at the end of the first half, Bremen unexpectedly pulled one back. Tuana Mahmoud was not pressed enough on the right wing and made a flat pass into the penalty area. Rieke Dieckmann made a timely run and scored with her right foot, beating Bayern’s goalkeeper Ena Mahmutovic. It was Bremen’s first goal against Bayern since 2018.

Schüller completes her hat-trick – Bayern remain dominant

After the break, Bayern’s women solidified their claim to the cup with a determined and dominant display. In the 55th minute, Klara Bühl missed a good chance, and soon after, Pernille Harder was denied by a strong save from Peng. But in the 65th minute, Schüller scored her second goal after a header, restoring Bayern’s two-goal lead.

As the game wore on, Bremen’s defensive gaps grew larger. In the 79th minute, Schüller completed her hat-trick with a brilliant curling shot to make it 4-1. Although Larissa Mühlhaus scored a late free-kick goal for Bremen in stoppage time, the outcome had long been decided.

After losing in last year’s final, FC Bayern rewarded themselves this season by winning both the league title and the cup—a historic achievement for the club’s women’s team.
