Munich – For comparison: just a week ago, temperatures in Munich reached almost 15 degrees Celsius, accompanied by abundant sunshine. The following day, last Friday, the sun shone all day, and it was even a bit warmer. However, the situation is set to change drastically on Thursday, November 20th. This year’s cold spell is arriving early and is forecast to last for several days. The reason, according to specialists from the German Meteorological Service (DWD), is that “cold maritime air will flow into Bavaria between a cyclone over the Baltic Sea and an anticyclone over the Atlantic.” This will be followed by snowfall and low temperatures across most of the Free State.
Up to 15 cm of Fresh Snow in Bavaria – Temperatures Expected Below Minus Ten Degrees
As the DWD meteorologists explained, snowfall is expected primarily near the Alps, from the Allgäu to the Berchtesgadener Land. “This afternoon, 1-3 cm in the Alps and in some eastern mid-level mountains, with 5-10 cm of fresh snow locally on the Alps’ windward slopes.” They added: “Light snowfall will begin in the Alps overnight into Friday, increasing to 5-10 cm by Friday evening, with around 15 cm on windward slopes.” Widespread black ice is also expected. Motorists who have not yet fitted their winter tires should do so immediately.
Deep Freeze in Bavaria: Frosty Days Ahead
The weekend will also be cold. “Overnight into Saturday, the snowfall will retreat to the Alps and then weaken. It will clear up from the northern mid-level mountains towards the Danube during this time. Minimum temperatures will range from -5 to -10 degrees.” It will be even colder on Saturday night into Sunday. Temperatures as low as minus eleven degrees are expected in Alpine valleys under clear skies. By the end of the weekend, black ice could become a problem again – the night into Monday (November 24th) could be hazardous on the roads. One thing is certain: the cold has arrived early and is here to stay for the foreseeable future.
