PIN.Friends Host Art Auction at the Pinakothek der Moderne

One should do it like Daniel Spoerri (1930-2024), the co-founder of so-called Eat Art.

Everything left on the tables in the rotunda of the Pinakothek der Moderne on the morning of Sunday, November 16th—the empty wine bottles, the spilled sauces, the breadcrumbs, and the candle wax—one would permanently fix it all, along with the tablecloths, full flower vases, glasses, plates, and cutlery. And then hang it vertically on the wall. As a testament to those nights of dancing, philosophizing, and drinking that one lives for. A night just like that is planned for November 15, 2025, when the PIN.Friends of the Pinakothek der Moderne invite guests to their art auction.

For 60 years, this support association has been dedicated to the museum. And it’s fair to say: for their anniversary, they are not holding back. There are two works by Sigmar Polke (1941-2010) on offer; one of them is a double piece (Lot 43) – two very amusing lithographs on paper with an estimated price of €9,500 – and also the highest-valued piece in this year’s auction (Lot 25): Polke’s 2 by 1.5 meter gouache on primed cardboard, which he treated with spray paint as if in passing, yet deliberately. Estimated price: €480,000.

However, the PIN.Friends board, including Dorothée Wahl, Annette Stadler, Katharina von Perfall, Stephanie Rechenberg, and Jeanette Apitz, emphasizes, as always, that one can acquire real treasures even in the low to mid five-figure range. For example, Daniel Spoerri’s “Fallenbild aus Fluxuskoffer” (Lot 51). One is surprised by the price, set at only €3,200. The reason: this piece does not use actual food remnants or real dishes; the scene on the table was entirely recreated by Spoerri from paper. The work was created as part of the “Fluxus-Koffer,” an edition containing eleven works by international artists from the Fluxus and Nouveau Réalisme movements. The case included works by Christo, Niki de Saint Phalle, Arman, and César, among others. Spoerri’s contribution was a foldable object made of paper—an ironic variation on his “Fallenbild” (snare picture) concept. The edition was limited to 600 copies. Many stories like this one are hidden behind the 53 works, which anyone can view for two weeks at the Pinakothek der Moderne starting November 1, 2025, even without a ticket for the PIN.Auction. The guided tours on Saturday the 1st at 3 PM, November 6th (6 PM), November 8th (3 PM), and November 13th (6 PM) are highly recommended.

Paola Pivi’s Bear Series is Also Featured in the Auction

The room where the works are hung is easy to find: just follow the pink feathered bear lounging casually at the entrance. For the eccentrics, this is the auction piece. Anyone who saw the exhibition “Eccentric. Ästhetik der Freiheit” at the Pinakothek der Moderne will remember the bear series by Italian artist Paola Pivi featured there. Now, one of them can be acquired in a smaller format. Its telling title: “I am jetlagged” (Lot 29). If the evening of November 15th goes really well, the guests will feel the same way the next day. After a magical night for art and culture. With memories that will last.
