The collapse of the Carolabrücke bridge in Dresden last autumn serves as a cautionary example of the devastating consequences that can result from poor structural condition. To prevent a similar scenario, the city of Fürth is closing the dilapidated Zirndorfer Brücke.
The decision was prompted by a new expert opinion indicating an immediate danger of collapse, the city administration reported. Accordingly, the bridge could collapse suddenly without prior warning signs like cracking. Furthermore, new calculations revealed that even ordinary passenger vehicles weighing up to 3.5 tons place excessive stress on the structure.
Demolition Needs to Be Accelerated
The structure was originally scheduled for demolition only at the end of 2027. These timelines are now being brought forward, Fürth’s Head of the Construction Department, Christina Lipper t, told Bavarian Radio. Precisely when the demolition will occur and a new bridge will be built cannot be reliably assessed at this time, the department head emphasized. Commutes for residents from adjacent districts will now require often lengthy detours via the Fürth-Süd interchange. As an alternative, they can also use the Graf-Stauffenberg-Brücke bridge near the Fürth-Fürberg exit.
The Dilapidated Zirndorfer Brücke Has Long Been a Source of Discontent
For years, the dilapidated Zirndorfer Brücke has consistently caused traffic disruptions and frustration among motorists. Because many truck drivers disregarded the weight limit, height restrictions were implemented. However, these were repeatedly ignored and damaged. The city estimates repair costs at over €100,000.
