Blasting Work at Kramertunnel Leads to Closures on the B23

Drivers in Garmisch should prepare for disruptions: starting Monday, blasting operations will take place at the Kramertunnel.

During the work, the B23 will be closed several times for short periods. The blasting is part of construction work for a retention basin connected to the tunnel.

In the coming weeks, several controlled blasts will be carried out at the Kramertunnel construction site. According to the Weilheim Roads Authority, blasting will take place about once a week between September 8 and September 29, always between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m.

Temporary Closures of the B23

For safety reasons, traffic on the B23 as well as pedestrian and cycling routes between Burgrain and the Garmisch access road will be stopped for a few minutes during each blast, officials said.

Rock Loosening for Retention Basin

The blasting is needed to construct a sedimentation and retention basin located a few meters below the future road surface. This basin will filter and regulate water draining from the main tunnel. Since solid rock lies beneath the northern portal, it must be loosened with controlled explosions before excavation can begin, the Weilheim authority explained.

Next year, road construction is scheduled to start. The southern section’s drainage system has already been completed. The 3.6-kilometer Kramertunnel is expected to be finished by late 2027, significantly reducing traffic pressure on the Garmisch district.
