Münchner Wohnen Plans Transitional Housing for Homeless Women with Dogs

Munich – Many people are familiar with this problem: finding a suitable rental apartment in Munich is a challenge.

If a dog is also supposed to move in, the difficulty level increases significantly. And for people who are already homeless – and also have a dog – the chances of finding any accommodation at all practically drop to zero. This is because many public emergency shelters do not allow pets.

Dogs Often Have to Go to Animal Shelters

A person can find shelter from the cold in one of the city’s cold-weather protection facilities, but their dog usually has to go to an animal shelter. However, people whose only emotional bond is often with their dog cannot bear this separation. They would rather endure the cold outdoors at night, which is particularly dangerous for women.

District Committee Welcomes the Project

The City of Munich has now found a solution. The municipal housing company, Münchner Wohnen, has applied to modernize the idyllically located building at Kirchweg 5 and establish it as a day center and transitional housing facility for single, homeless women with dogs. This is a construction project that the District Committee of Thalkirchen-Obersendling-Forstenried-Fürstenried-Solln not only approved in its recent meeting but also explicitly welcomed. The general sentiment was that this is a Munich project with a model character.
