Bavaria Launches Public Initiative to Eliminate Remaining Mobile Dead Zones

Bavaria is intensifying efforts to eliminate the last mobile network dead zones across the state, calling on citizens to help identify areas with poor or no signal.

Weak mobile coverage remains a persistent problem, affecting not only individuals but also regional business development when companies opt against certain locations due to unreliable connectivity.

Starting this week, Bavaria is participating in the country’s first nationwide Mobile Coverage Measurement Week. Citizens can report dead zones or perform broadband speed tests through the official app of the Federal Network Agency, according to a statement by the Bavarian Ministry of Economic Affairs.

Mobile Coverage Lacking Despite Major Investments

“Poor mobile reception is more than just an annoyance—it’s a serious issue for both private users and businesses. Reliable mobile coverage is not a luxury but a key economic factor,” said Bavarian Minister for Economic Affairs Hubert Aiwanger (Free Voters). He emphasized that public data submissions will improve the accuracy of network expansion assessments.

Despite significant investments in recent years, large gaps in mobile coverage persist. “There are still numerous dead spots that need to be eliminated,” Aiwanger noted.

As part of a €130 million funding program, numerous new mobile masts have already been constructed across Bavaria. In addition, the state continues to support local municipalities in building further infrastructure. These towers are then leased to mobile providers, ensuring long-term service expansion.

Through this joint effort with residents, the Bavarian government aims to systematically close existing coverage gaps and strengthen digital infrastructure throughout the region.
