What began as a warm and sunny start to May has quickly given way to a return of cooler, more variable spring weather.
Warm Spell Peaks Ahead of Weekend Before Abrupt Change
The extended May Day weekend began with near-perfect conditions in Munich. Clear skies and abundant sunshine sent temperatures soaring close to 30 degrees Celsius, especially on Friday, May 2. The German Weather Service (DWD) had forecast midday highs of up to 25 degrees, with evening temperatures potentially reaching 27 degrees. A strong high-pressure system, bringing warm subtropical air from the southwest, was responsible for the brief early summer surge. The mild weather was accompanied by a moderate to occasionally brisk wind from the southwest to west.
Saturday, May 3, continued the warm trend, although with some early morning cloud cover. Throughout the day, the clouds were expected to break up, allowing the sun to dominate once again. Temperatures were projected to peak at around 24 degrees. According to several weather portals, the chance of rain remained low at approximately 25 percent.
Cold Front Brings Rain, Thunderstorms, and a Nearly 20-Degree Drop
The shift arrived on Sunday, May 4, as dense cloud cover, intermittent showers, and isolated thunderstorms replaced the sunny skies. Southern Bavaria, including Munich, experienced locally intense rainfall. Morning temperatures dropped significantly to around 12 degrees, and daytime highs barely reached 17 degrees as rain persisted throughout the day.
The cooler pattern continued into the new week. Forecasts indicated that Monday would see temperatures struggling to reach even 11 degrees, with more rain expected across the region. The previously dominant warm and dry air mass had been fully displaced by a colder, more unstable system.
Outlook for the Coming Days Remains Cool and Unsettled
The sudden drop in temperature marked a return to weather conditions more typical of early spring. The outlook for the rest of the week pointed to continued cool and unstable weather in Munich, with little sign of a return to the early summer warmth experienced just days earlier. The start of May has brought weather more reminiscent of April’s usual mix of sunshine, showers, and chill.
Residents were advised to keep umbrellas and jackets at hand, as the unexpected spring heatwave gave way to a more familiar pattern of cool and changeable conditions.
