New Shelter for Homeless Youth Secured in Munich with Relocation to Obersendling

The emergency shelter “Sleepin” for homeless youth in Munich has been saved and will reopen in Obersendling in autumn 2025 following its departure from the previous location on Bayerstraße.

The facility provides overnight accommodation and a safe space for young people aged 14 to 18 who are either ineligible for youth welfare services or not currently engaged in such programs and face homelessness. “Sleepin” offers these vulnerable youths a critical point of support and refuge.

After it became clear that continued operation at the Bayerstraße site was no longer possible, the City of Munich arranged a temporary facility in Milbertshofen starting in April. This interim location allowed the shelter to remain open without interruption, preventing closure, as Frank Boos, spokesperson for the Social Department, explained to “Hallo” magazine.

The new permanent location in Obersendling is expected to open in late summer 2025. Renovations are currently underway at the site. As before, the shelter will maintain 16 places for young people. The operator will continue to be the nonprofit association Wohnhilfe e.V., according to Boos.

The District Committee 19 unanimously approved the change of use for the building, which was originally approved as commercial property but had remained vacant until now. The internal conversion of the premises into an emergency and protection shelter for youth was also authorized.

Two Support Services for Youth Will Be Available at New Location

Alexander Aichwalder, chair of the subcommittee for construction and planning, explained that the district committee recognized the ongoing need for such facilities. The new site in Obersendling will house two important services: a low-threshold emergency shelter offering overnight stays and counseling, and a separate residential protection facility for particularly vulnerable young people, including those affected by domestic violence.

To protect the youths, the exact address of the new shelter will not be publicly disclosed. Aichwalder noted that although the high demand for these services remains regrettable, it was essential to provide this vital assistance within the district.

“Sleepin” originally opened in spring 2023. Since then, 464 young people have used the Bayerstraße facility. At the temporary Milbertshofen site, 54 youths have been supported since April 1, with some staying for multiple nights, reported Boos from the Social Department.
