New License Plate Codes Approved in Munich

Starting January 19, changes to vehicle registration rules took effect in the Munich district. Alongside the traditional code, the combination MU has been introduced. From MU-SI to MU-EH, this report explores the creative ways these new letter combinations can be used.

Munich — As of January 19, residents of the Munich district have been granted the right to use a new letter combination for vehicle registration. Instead of the single letter M, the combination MU is now available. This abbreviation stands for Münchner Umland (Munich Surroundings) and is intended to “help strengthen regional identity,” according to government officials. While the standard M remains the default for initial registrations, opting for MU is possible for an additional fee of 10.20 euros. Since many vehicle owners enjoy creating linguistic puns on their plates, several combinations are highlighted below.

Expanded List of Available Codes and Possible Combinations in the Munich District

  • MU-SI: A nod to the region’s musical traditions, which are celebrated daily at venues like the Hofbräuhaus. The Bavarian Brass Music Association notes that there are over 2,500 such orchestras in the state.
  • MU-SK: The surname of Tesla CEO Elon Musk. Given the controversial views of the entrepreneur, whose wealth is estimated in the hundreds of billions, it remains to be seen how popular this combination will be on car bumpers.
  • MU-RR: For some, this refers to a regional butcher shop chain; for others, it is a tribute to Ernst Theodor Amadeus Hoffmann’s 1819 literary classic, The Life and Opinions of the Tomcat Murr. A few meat-loaf rolls might be necessary to get through that particular masterpiece.

New Abbreviation Options: From MU-FF to MU-CA

  • MU-FF: This may evoke associations with past protest movements or the winter accessory—fur muffs—traditionally used to keep hands warm, most commonly found in historical female wardrobes.
  • MU-CK: A combination for fans of classic literature. Exactly 200 years ago, Wilhelm Hauff wrote The Story of Little Muck. In modern versions, certain narrative details are occasionally adjusted to align with current educational standards.
  • MU-H: In Munich, some still connect this to the music scene of the early 70s, which served as a launching pad for famous performers. However, for most, the letters simply mimic the sound of a cow.
  • MU-CA: A code for frequenters of the Museum of Urban and Contemporary Art on Holzstraße. Nearby is the “Hundskugel,” a former tavern that has now become a social meeting hub.

New Rules Allow for Word-Forming Combinations

  • MU-LI: A reference to animals like the mule or the hinny. The difference lies in their parentage: a mule is the offspring of a male donkey and a female horse, while a hinny is the offspring of a male horse and a female donkey. Using the general German term Muli helps avoid biological inaccuracies.
  • MU-LL: At a glance, this combination could be associated with the German word for “trash” (Müll), which is unlikely to enhance a vehicle’s image. In another sense, the word refers to “mull,” a type of fabric used in medical dressings.
  • MU-EH: A choice deemed suitable for a Monday morning or any workday when the drive requires significant willpower and an effort to overcome fatigue (evoking the German Mühe, meaning effort or toil).
