Munich’s Schützenstraße Set to Be Transformed into a Dining Mile

It's grey, dreary, and borders a construction ruin: Schützenstraße, located between Stachus and the main train station, is one of Munich's shabbiest streets.

The Green Party/Rosa Liste/Volt faction on the city council now wants to spruce it up—and turn it into a gastro-mile!

In a motion for the Planning Committee, the faction is calling for a kiosk or a food truck to be installed on Schützenstraße. According to the politicians, these would “create a more lively atmosphere.” “This requires mobile play elements so that this traffic-calmed section of the street can become attractive for families again.” This is to be complemented by a new photo exhibition on the construction fence. “The motifs can be chosen in such a way that they are attractive as ‘selfie spots’.” Furthermore, the bike rental service, which had to relocate from the Starnberg wing of the train station, is planned to move there in mobile containers.

What makes Schützenstraße so shabby is the Galeria ruin. It was supposed to be demolished and replaced by a building designed by star architect David Chipperfield. However, the property belonged to bankrupt tycoon René Benko. Since the insolvency of his Signa Group, all work has ground to a halt. A new buyer has not yet been found.

The insolvency administrator is, however, working on the sale of the properties and, according to the city planning department, expects that the new owner will implement the Chipperfield plans, as stated by the Greens. “The Planning Committee approved the corresponding development plan this Wednesday (October 29) and thus cleared the way.” So now, all that’s needed is a developer.

In the meantime, several shops on Schützenstraße have closed down: The Rewe supermarket in the lower level near Munich’s main station is gone. In the Pini building towards Stachus, a hotel and a restaurant had to move out—the building is being renovated. And because of this, Schützenstraße won’t become any prettier in the foreseeable future.
