With expanded permissions for cultural use, the historic square will host more concerts than ever before. According to internal planning discussions, big-name performers such as Apache 207, Paul Kalkbrenner and Nick Cave are being considered for the upcoming concert series.
In recent years, Königsplatz has evolved far beyond its roots as a venue for open-air cinema, cultural festivals and events like the “Oben Ohne” Festival. It has hosted internationally known acts including Billy Idol, Rednex, Dr. Alban, Lou Bega and the Rockavaria Festival. The city now aims to make even greater use of this central location, further anchoring it in Munich’s live music culture.
As first reported by the Süddeutsche Zeitung, Munich’s City Council Committee for District Administration (Kreisverwaltungsausschuss) approved an expansion that will allow events to take place across four weekends in years when the International Motor Show (IAA) is not held in the city. Previously, only three weekends were permitted. Each of these weekends will include two concert days, allowing for a total of eight major concert days in 2026. In addition, an exception has been granted for one extra concert day to be added to an existing weekend.
City Councillor Lena Odell of the Social Democratic Party (SPD) called the decision a balanced compromise. She explained that the needs of both visitors and local residents had been carefully considered, and that the result would create “even more Munich flair” in one of the city’s most iconic public spaces.
Artists Under Discussion Include Apache 207, Paul Kalkbrenner and Nick Cave
According to well-placed sources, the 2026 concert lineup is already taking shape behind the scenes. While no artists have been officially confirmed, Apache 207 and Paul Kalkbrenner are reportedly being considered for two concerts each. The German rap star and the internationally acclaimed electronic music producer are expected to appeal to a younger audience, potentially diversifying the demographics of the crowd compared to previous years.
Also under consideration is a performance by Nick Cave, the Australian musician known for his emotionally intense ballads such as “Red Right Hand” and “Into My Arms.” If confirmed, the concert would mark Cave’s return to Munich following his performance at Olympiahalle in October 2024. Sources indicated that this booking is still in the early stages of planning.
City Office Confirms Schedule but Keeps Lineup Confidential
The Kreisverwaltungsreferat (KVR), the city’s administrative department responsible for permitting public events, declined to comment on the specific artists involved. In a written statement, the KVR explained: “The names of the organizers selected for 2026 and the associated artists remain confidential. Any announcements regarding lineups are the sole responsibility of the event organizers.”
However, the KVR confirmed the expanded schedule, stating that in non-IAA years, four concert weekends will be permitted, each featuring two days of performances. Additionally, a special proposal passed by the city council will allow for a one-time extra concert day, to be added to an existing weekend by using the same stage setup.
While the final lineup remains uncertain, one thing is clear: the summer of 2026 at Königsplatz will offer more live music than ever before, promising a rich and varied experience for concertgoers in Munich.
