Munich municipal services launch spring cleaning of city areas

Munich is officially saying goodbye to winter grayness and moving into a mode of large-scale renewal.

The Construction Department of the Bavarian capital has launched the annual grand cleaning, transforming city streets, bicycle paths, and cozy squares into exemplary clean spaces. The main goal of this spring marathon is to rid the metropolis of thousands of tons of stone chippings, which for several months ensured traffic safety on icy roads but have now become redundant.

According to the official administration report, the city road cleaning service, together with engaged contractors, has taken custody of a colossal territory. In total, specialists must bring into proper condition about 2,400 kilometers of motor roads, 980 kilometers of dedicated paths for cyclists, and 1,500 kilometers of sidewalks. Pedestrian zones will not be ignored either — that is another 125,000 square meters of tiles and asphalt in the very heart of the city.

The scale of the work is impressive: approximately 14,000 tons of gravel chippings are planned to be swept from the streets. This material is not simply discarded but undergoes a strict recycling procedure established by law. The cleaned and sorted gravel subsequently returns to the city economy — construction firms actively use it for new projects, making the cleaning process not only useful but also environmentally friendly.

Munich streets and parks: Construction Department prepares city for spring season

Once a year, municipal services provide a gift even to those districts located outside full communal service zones. The city road cleaning service helps remove chippings from the roadway for free, even if it is not part of their standard protocol. This service significantly eases life for landowners, sparing them from heavy physical labor and guaranteeing that the collected material ends up in proper recycling rather than a regular trash bin.

Nevertheless, the Construction Department reminded everyone of the areas of responsibility: owners of adjacent plots outside full service zones are still obliged to independently clean the sidewalks in front of their houses. Thanks to the favorable weather conditions established in the Bavarian capital, crews began performing tasks in stages several weeks ago, trying to make the most of dry days for efficient equipment operation.

Parks and green zones: Horticulture Department shifts cleaning to summer mode

While road services battle gravel, employees of the Main Horticulture Department, along with an army of contractors, are creating a spring mood in the city’s green lungs. Under their care are about 1,300 public parks and squares, which must greet the first picnic lovers fully prepared. City gardeners have already begun installing decorative flower pots and planting thousands of spring flowers — delicate petals of primroses and bulbous plants will soon decorate the usual routes of citizens.

Seasonal work on tree care and shrub pruning has already been successfully completed. Now, the main focus has shifted to the preparation of children’s water playgrounds, which are so popular on warm days. Where winter chippings have fallen onto lawns or park paths, thorough cleaning is also being carried out. Due to the fact that Munich residents are starting to spend more time in parks, the Horticulture Department is officially shifting the garbage collection schedule to summer mode — cleanliness in recreation zones will now be maintained much more frequently.Source: Munich City Administration
