The route stretched across the city, starting in the Olympic Park and continuing through the English Garden, along the high bank of the Isar River, through the Werksviertel district, back into the city center, and finally returning to the Olympic Park. Participants could choose to run the full marathon, a half marathon, or a 10-kilometer race. According to the German Press Agency (dpa), this year’s event saw a particularly high number of participants.
With approximately 28,500 participants across all races, the event set a new record in Munich, according to the organizers. Additionally, around 150,000 spectators lined the streets to cheer on the runners.
The winners of the 42.195-kilometer race were Gabriel Lautenschlager from MTV Bamberg and Nina Voelckel from Laufteam Kassel. Lautenschlager finished with a time of 2:18:28, while Voelckel was listed as the women’s winner with a time of 2:31:33.
“It’s a real honor for me. Winning in the most beautiful major city in Germany is fantastic,” said Lautenschlager. “You could really just enjoy the course.” Voelckel also raved about the atmosphere in Munich, despite the physical strain. “It was brutally hard, especially the incline at kilometer 22,” said the 26-year-old.
