Munich Holds Commemorative Events for the 87th Anniversary of the November Pogroms

Munich – This year marks the 87th anniversary of the horrific November pogroms against Jews.

Munich, which the Nazis designated the “Capital of the Movement,” played a particularly significant role: It was here, in the Old Town Hall, that Josef Goebbels officially incited violent attacks on the lives and property of the Jewish population on November 9, 1938.

The District Committee of Au-Haidhausen will commemorate the atrocities of the Nazi era on Thursday, November 6th, starting at 7:00 PM. Committee Chair Jörg Spengler and Hermann Wilhelm from the Haidhausen Museum will speak about, among other topics, the Hitler-Ludendorff Putsch, the bomb attack by resistance fighter Georg Elser targeting Hitler and the Nazi leadership, and the resistance efforts in the Au and Haidhausen districts. “It will be a reading in five parts,” Wilhelm explained to Hallo.

Because the memorial plaque for Georg Elser, which is set into the ground between the old Gasteig/Fat Cat and the GEMA building at Rosenheimer Straße 11, is currently within a construction site, all interested participants are asked to gather at the rear of the Gasteig, near the Tool Library. The event is being held in cooperation with the Obergiesing-Fasangarten District Committee.

Further Commemorative Events

In Bogenhausen, the District Committee and the team at Trinity Church (Dreieinigkeitskirche), Wehrlestraße 8, will honor the victims of National Socialism with texts and songs by Jewish poets and composers. The event takes place on Saturday, November 8th, starting at 6:00 PM. On the same day, the citizens’ initiative “Mehr Platz zum Leben” invites the public to lay a wreath at the memorial for the victims of the Pogrom Night at Hochleite. The meeting point is at 2:00 PM at the intersection of Über der Klause and Isenschmidstraße.

District Committee 18 will commemorate, on Tuesday, November 25th, the Munich Jews who were murdered 84 years ago in Kaunas, Lithuania, on the orders of SS Colonel Karl Jäger. Around 1,000 people were killed, including 14-year-old Ruth Güttner and her mother. The ceremony will be held at St. Helena Church, Fromundstraße 2, starting at 6:00 PM.

Commemorations in Other City Districts for the Pogrom Night

Numerous other District Committees hold events every year in memory of the Jewish victims of the November Pogroms of November 9, 1938. For example, the Maxvorstadt District Committee invites the public to a name-reading ceremony and commemoration on Sunday, November 9th, starting at 6:30 PM on Königsplatz.

The Neuhausen-Nymphenburg District Committee is holding a name-reading event on Monday, November 10th, starting at 2:00 PM at the public bookcase on the corner of Nymphenburger Straße and Waisenhausstraße. At 4:00 PM, a lecture by Franz Schröther will follow in the Trafo Bürgersaal, Nymphenburger Straße 171a. The head of the local history workshop will speak about “Traces of Jewish Life in Neuhausen.”

Also on November 9th, the local District Committee 8 will commemorate the persecuted Jewish neighbors in the Schwanthalerhöhe district. The meeting point is at 4:00 PM at the Schwanthalerhöhe U-Bahn station (Sandtnerstraße exit).
