Munich Chooses Yellow Bin System for Plastic Waste Collection Starting in 2027

A proposal from the Department of Waste Management (AWM), obtained by the press, outlines the plan, which will replace smaller recycling container stations with a more comprehensive bin-based system.

Pilot Project Concludes with Clear Preference

The city had tested several collection models, including the Yellow Sack, Yellow Bin, and a mixed-material recycling bin, in a scientifically monitored trial. The goal was to identify the most efficient and user-friendly system for residents. Based on the results, the Yellow Bin emerged as the preferred solution.

City Council to Approve Implementation Plan

City officials recommend that the municipal council authorize AWM to collaborate with Germany’s Dual Systems to roll out the Yellow Bin as a curbside collection method. This would phase out many of the smaller container stations, which would be supplemented by additional glass recycling bins.

Collection Every Two Weeks, Minimum Size Set

According to the proposal, the Yellow Bins will be emptied every 14 days. Each bin will have a minimum capacity of 240 liters to accommodate the expected volume of waste.

Decision Based on Multi-Criteria Assessment

The decision followed an in-depth evaluation using a framework of nine weighted criteria, including:

  • Quantity of collected materials (most heavily weighted at 20%)
  • Rate of incorrect disposal
  • Feasibility of implementation
  • Cost efficiency
  • Public acceptance

While the mixed-material bin scored highest in terms of collected volume, the Yellow Bin received the highest overall score of 6.5. In comparison, the mixed bin scored 5.6, the current container system 5.0, and the Yellow Sack only 4.6.

Yellow Bin Praised for Visual Impact, Cost, and Public Approval

The Yellow Bin was rated particularly well in areas like city aesthetics, operational costs, and customer satisfaction. These strengths ultimately tipped the scales in favor of its adoption.

Launch Date and Financial Considerations

The Yellow Bin system is scheduled to be introduced on January 1, 2027. The initial service contract will run through December 31, 2029. The city administration has assured residents that no additional fees will be charged for the new service.

Environmental Benefits Expected

The proposal suggests that switching to the Yellow Bin will improve the city’s recycling rate, leading to a significant reduction in greenhouse gas emissions and supporting Munich’s broader climate protection goals.

Widespread Administrative Support Behind the Plan

The Department of Climate and Environmental Protection, the District Administration Department, and the city’s legal office all support the recommendation. Local district councils will not be involved in the decision process.

Final Vote Scheduled for Early July

The results of the pilot program will be presented to the public on Monday, May 26. The proposal will then be discussed in the city council on Thursday, June 5, with a final decision expected during the full council meeting on Wednesday, July 2.
