On Friday, August 1, the traditional Brunnenfest (Fountain Festival) will turn the city’s central market square into a vibrant hub of local entertainment and Bavarian folk culture. More than 70 artists from the realms of cabaret, folk singing, theatre, and costumed performance will present a diverse and colorful program across multiple stages.
Three Main Stages – Plus Surprise Performances Around the Market
The festival will span three central locations: the Karl Valentin Fountain near Café Nymphenburg, the Liesl Karlstadt Fountain by the beer garden, and the Elise Aulinger Fountain near the Church of the Holy Spirit (Heilig-Geist-Kirche). In addition to scheduled performances, visitors can also expect spontaneous acts throughout the market area. The festivities will be officially opened at 12:00 p.m. at the Karl Valentin Fountain by Munich’s Third Mayor Verena Dietl.
Artistic Highlights with Couplet-AG, Roland Hefter, and More
The artistic direction of the event lies in the hands of Jürgen Kirner, known for his numerous initiatives promoting Bavarian folk culture. This year’s lineup includes well-known names such as Die Couplet-AG, Roland Hefter, Drent und Herent, D’Filsers, and Ferdinand Klar. Their wide-ranging repertoire promises a lively and entertaining day at the market, filled with laughter, music, and tradition.
A Celebration for the Senses – and a Tribute to Munich’s Identity
Mayor Verena Dietl expressed her excitement about the upcoming event:
“The traditional and widely loved Brunnenfest at the Viktualienmarkt is an integral part of Munich’s cultural life. Every year, Jürgen Kirner curates an outstanding ensemble of folk performers. Especially at the start of the holiday season, it is wonderful that people can enjoy this special market atmosphere – it invites everyone to relax and linger.”
