Drunken Man Hurls Bottles in Public Before Being Stopped
On Sunday afternoon, a 40-year-old man created panic at the station’s Arnulfstraße exit by shouting aggressively and throwing beer bottles in the direction of a nearby group of people. Though no one was hit, the scene alarmed witnesses. According to the Federal Police, the man was carrying a crate of beer and reached for a third bottle when two passersby intervened to stop him.
One of the interveners, a 49-year-old man, narrowly avoided being struck on the head when the attacker tried to hit him with a bottle. Police soon arrived at the scene and arrested the aggressor, who is now facing charges of attempted aggravated assault. He is scheduled to appear before a magistrate at the request of the public prosecutor’s office.
Helper Arrested Over Unpaid Fine From Prior Offense
However, in a surprising twist, the 49-year-old man who helped defuse the situation was also taken into custody. A background check revealed an outstanding arrest warrant issued by the Munich District Court. He had previously been convicted of drunk driving and fined €2,623. Since he had neither paid the fine nor demonstrated the ability to do so, authorities ordered that he serve a substitute custodial sentence of 44 days, as confirmed by the police.
Authorities Consider Deportation of Suspect
The bottle-throwing suspect is a Somali national, and authorities suspect he may be residing in Germany without legal permission. The Munich District Administration’s immigration unit had already issued a notice seeking to confirm his residency status. A deportation is now under consideration, pending further investigation into his immigration situation.
Ongoing Investigation Into Related Incident at the Station
Meanwhile, police are also investigating a separate altercation that occurred at the station around the same time. Two suspects fled the scene, while a juvenile involved in the incident was apprehended. The investigations into both events are ongoing.
The situation underscores the complex realities faced by law enforcement at major transport hubs, where spontaneous acts of violence can lead to unexpected consequences—even for those who act with bravery.
