A Tough Time Ahead for Munich Commuters: 40 S-Bahn Construction Sites in Just Under Four Weeks

The main S-Bahn line in Munich will be closed on three weekends. This is in addition to numerous construction works on the outer branches of the S-Bahn network. The airport will also be temporarily cut off.

The next four weeks will be challenging again for rail commuters. A wave of around 40 individual construction measures will affect the entire S-Bahn network. Starting this weekend with another closure of the main line, things are essentially hitting hard, and even afterwards, passage will be difficult in sections. On one weekend, the airport will also be cut off from the S-Bahn. Here is an overview:

A Tough Time Ahead for Munich Commuters: 40 S-Bahn Construction Sites in Just Under Four Weeks

  • Main Line: From this Friday (10:20 PM) until Monday (4:30 AM), the main line between Pasing and Ostbahnhof will be largely closed.
  • Lines S3, S5, and S8 will run normally until early Saturday, after which they will also terminate at Pasing or Giesing.
  • The S7 will terminate at the main station (Hauptbahnhof) as usual. Similar closures will occur on the first Advent weekend (November 29 – December 1) and the second Advent weekend (December 6 – 8).

There is also a large-scale closure during the week from Monday, November 24, until Saturday, November 29:

  • The S6 will run only every 40 minutes between Pasing and Tutzing during the day and not at all between Pasing and Gauting at night.
  • A 40-minute service interval will also apply for the S8 between Pasing and Harthaus.
  • The S5 will be more or less completely canceled.
  • Airport: On the weekend after next, only buses will serve the airport, no S-Bahn trains.
  • The S1 will be canceled on the Neufahrn–Airport section continuously from Friday, November 21, at 5:30 PM until Monday, November 24, at 3:00 AM; the S8 between Ismaning and the Airport will also not run from Thursday, November 20, until Monday (5:00 AM).

What more have to know?

S1: Besides the airport closure, there are five other construction sites, including some at night. Most significantly: From December 1 to 7, the S1 will only operate between Leuchtenbergring and Lohhof. During this time, the S8 can be used to reach the airport, which Deutsche Bahn says will run with “the maximum possible train capacity.” From December 7 to 12, the S1 will terminate even earlier, at Feldmoching. It will be particularly difficult for Freising commuters, as regional trains will also not run between Hauptbahnhof and Freising.

S2: There are four additional construction sites. For instance, the Dachau–Petershausen section will be closed for the S-Bahn from December 1 to 9.

S3: Deutsche Bahn lists six individual construction measures here, but only at night, resulting in train cancellations or a 60-minute service interval between Pasing and Mammendorf.

S4: Two construction sites will affect rail traffic, but only for two nights between Pasing/Fürstenfeldbruck and Geltendorf.

S5: In addition to the main line closure, the S5 branch to Aying–Kreuzstraße will be closed from November 15 to 17.

S6: There will be construction sites for two nights between Ostbahnhof and Ebersberg.

S7: Five construction sites are planned. At an unusual time (from November 18, 1:40 PM, until November 19, 6:40 PM), there will be replacement bus service between Höllriegelskreuth and Wolfratshausen.

S8: Four more construction sites are scheduled. For example, the S8 will be reduced to a 40-minute service interval on the Ostbahnhof–Airport route from 9:45 PM on the nights of November 24/25 to November 28/29.
