The incident occurred on the tracks of the Kahlgrund Railway near Alzenau, in the Aschaffenburg district. According to police, the woman attempted to cross the tracks at an unguarded crossing and apparently failed to notice the approaching regional train. Police have not yet clarified why the cyclist did not see the train.
Investigators are determining the cause of the accident
The emergency doctor who arrived at the scene could only confirm the woman’s death. The fire brigade was also dispatched to the site. A railway accident specialist is assisting police and prosecutors in determining the cause of the collision.
Passengers on the train were supported by a crisis psychological service after the incident. Rail traffic on the Kahlgrund line between Schöllkrippen and Kahl am Main was temporarily suspended, with replacement buses put into operation.
Crossings without barriers remain a problem
The situation once again draws attention to the state of Bavaria’s railway infrastructure:
- the region has around 2,900 railway crossings;
- more than 1,600 of them — over 57% — are not equipped with barriers.
Such crossings are considered high-risk zones: pedestrians and cyclists must rely solely on their own vigilance, without additional automatic protection. The circumstances of the cyclist’s death in Alzenau will become known once the investigation is complete.
