Hausham/Miesbach — A serious incident concluded with a positive outcome on Thursday night when two missing children were found following an extensive search operation in Hausham. According to police reports, the siblings, aged eight and eleven, lost their orientation in a nearby forest and eventually lay down to sleep in a clearing. Due to prolonged exposure to the elements, they suffered from mild hypothermia.
Parents Contact Police After Initial Search
The parents reported the disappearance of their 11-year-old daughter and 8-year-old son on Thursday. Prior to contacting authorities, they had unsuccessfully searched their farm property and the immediate surrounding areas. Concerns were heightened as the children were only lightly dressed for the conditions.
Community Members Join Professional Rescuers
More than 200 personnel from the mountain rescue service, emergency medical services, water rescue, fire department, and police spent several hours combing the terrain around Hausham. The operation utilized several K9 units and a police helicopter. In addition to professional services, local residents organized into groups to assist in searching the community’s territory.
Search Dog Locates the Siblings
Relief came shortly before midnight when a search dog discovered the sleeping children in a forest clearing. In the darkness, they had lost their way and, exhausted, lay down on the grass.
The eight-year-old boy and eleven-year-old girl were treated for mild hypothermia. Rescue workers transported them to a hospital for medical evaluation. Officials stated that their condition was not a cause for concern, and they were returned to their parents later that same night.
