German Army Helicopter Crashes into River Mulde in Saxony – Wreckage Located, Cause Unknown

Grimma (Saxony) – A helicopter belonging to the German armed forces (Bundeswehr) crashed on Tuesday morning near the town of Grimma in Saxony.

According to the Leipzig police, the aircraft went down into the River Mulde. As of now, it remains unclear how many individuals were on board or whether there are any casualties. A spokesperson for the Leipzig police confirmed the crash to the press.

According to preliminary information, the helicopter disappeared from radar between 10:00 and 10:30 a.m., as reported by a spokesperson from the district fire brigade association of Leipzig County. Around 12:00 p.m., kayakers discovered debris floating in the river. A spokesman for the German Air Force in Berlin confirmed that the helicopter had been on a training flight at the time of the incident.

Military No-Go Zone Established – Number of Occupants Still Unknown

Leipzig police stated that the wreckage clearly belongs to a Bundeswehr aircraft. Military authorities have established a restricted zone around the crash site. Earlier, Bild newspaper had reported that a helicopter and its Bundeswehr pilot were missing.

The German Federal Ministry of Defence also confirmed that the aircraft was part of the Bundeswehr’s flight operations. Military personnel have already been deployed to the site to carry out rescue efforts and investigate the cause of the crash. By the afternoon, there was still no official information available about the number of crew members or whether anyone had been injured.

Fuel Leak Complicates Recovery Operations

According to a fire department spokesperson speaking to the German Press Agency (dpa), a large quantity of aviation fuel leaked at the crash site. The wreckage is located in the middle of the riverbed and is difficult to access, significantly hampering recovery efforts. Around 50 emergency personnel are currently working to pump out the leaked fuel and prepare for the recovery of the wreckage.

Authorities are working at full speed to bring the situation under control. The cause of the crash remains unknown, and investigations are ongoing. So far, there is no confirmed information on whether a technical malfunction or human error may have led to the accident.
