The hiker fell over a waterfall and succumbed to her severe injuries overnight. Her 48-year-old husband, who rushed to help her, was seriously injured but is not in life-threatening condition according to police.
Details of the Tragic Accident
The couple was part of an eight-person hiking group led by a mountain guide, preparing to climb Zugspitze the following day. The group had planned to stay overnight at Reintalangerhütte. On Wednesday evening, they went bathing at the Partnach’s source.
The 49-year-old woman became trapped in a deep pool (water hole) and couldn’t stay afloat. The strong current swept her away and she fell over a waterfall. Both her husband and the guide jumped in to rescue her but got into trouble themselves. While the guide managed to save himself, the couple was carried away by the current.
Large-Scale Rescue Operation
Mountain rescue deployed 13 personnel, including four emergency doctors, working until about 2:30 AM. Both victims were airlifted to hospitals by helicopter. The woman died overnight from her injuries, while the man survived with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
Support for Witnesses
The couple’s two children and another child witnessed the accident. Rescue teams escorted them down to the valley and to the injured father at the hospital, where a crisis intervention team provided support. Police alpine units are currently investigating the exact circumstances.
