Danone Recalls Baby Food in Germany Following Discovery of Toxic Substances

The investigation into toxic traces in baby food has widened. Following a similar move by Nestlé, the French food giant Danone has been forced to recall several batches of its products.

The French food group Danone is recalling at least three batches of Aptamil brand baby food in Germany. This information emerged from a company letter sent to a wholesaler on Thursday. The recall is part of a broader investigation into potential contamination with a toxic substance initially discovered in products from its competitor, Nestlé.

The Federal Office of Consumer Protection and Food Safety (BVL) confirmed on Thursday that specific batches of Danone products are being withdrawn from the market. According to the correspondence, the recall affects items manufactured between May and August 2025.

Contamination Linked to Chinese Supplier

In early January, chemists identified traces of cereulide in Nestlé infant formula. This toxin can cause nausea and vomiting; it entered the production chain through an ingredient sourced from a supplier in China. Nestlé recalled its affected baby food shortly thereafter. Other French manufacturers, such as Lactalis, have now also been impacted.

Danone’s shares have lost nearly 13 percent of their value over the past two weeks. In France, investigators are examining a possible link between the deaths of two infants and the recalled baby food products. Danone had already announced the withdrawal of items in certain markets last Friday, though it did not name specific countries or brands at that time.
