Special Flight Over Nuremberg Tonight: What is Behind the Activity?

A specialized aircraft will be operating over city rooftops on the night between Monday and Tuesday. Residents should be prepared for potential noise disturbances during this time.

Planned for the night of Monday, January 19, to Tuesday, January 20, a DA62 propeller aircraft will conduct a mission on behalf of the energy provider N-Ergie.

Provided conditions are suitable—meaning dry and relatively cold weather—the aircraft will take off around 8:00 PM and fly over the city until approximately 4:00 AM. Operating at an altitude of just over one kilometer, the plane will inspect roughly 300 kilometers of power and heating lines. To accomplish this, it is equipped with specialized infrared technology designed to provide data on the condition of the district heating network and identify any operational faults. N-Ergie stated that these measures are being taken to ensure supply reliability.

Company representatives also noted that noise interference may occur during the operation. The energy provider has asked residents for their understanding and explained why the inspection of Nuremberg’s heating network must take place at night. First, this minimizes disruption to regular air traffic; second, nighttime operation reduces external interference with measurements, such as sunlight or heat generated by heavy road traffic.

If weather conditions prove unfavorable, the “infrared flyover” will have to be rescheduled.
