Marienschlucht Gorge Reopen After Fatal Landslide

After eleven years of closure, the Marienschlucht Gorge on Lake Constance is set to reopen to visitors in the spring of 2026. The reopening is scheduled for next spring.

Ludwigshafen. On March 28, 2026, the municipality of Bodman-Ludwigshafen is inviting the public to an “Open Gorge Day,” when this natural monument will be publicly accessible again for the first time, as announced by the municipality.

Gorge Closed After Fatal Tragedy

The popular tourist gorge was closed in 2015 following a landslide. A woman died in the accident, and a man was seriously injured. Subsequently, the hiking trail was thoroughly redesigned, and the safety concept was fundamentally revised.

A major component of the new design is a new panoramic bridge that crosses the gorge. “The path no longer runs along the bottom of the gorge,” explained Sandra Domogalla, Head of Tourism, Culture, and Marketing for the municipality. According to Domogalla, visitors will be able to enjoy a “spectacular view” into the narrow, rocky gorge and onto Lake Constance from this bridge.

Marienschlucht Remains Closed for Now

The former wooden structure has been replaced by a steel construction, which was built from two sides meeting in the middle. The Marienschlucht is still closed at the moment as construction continues. However, the remaining work should be completed in time for the opening date, according to the municipality.

The Marienschlucht is located at the western end of Lake Constance, Germany’s largest lake. With its reopening, ships will once again be able to travel there, including from the opposite shore in Überlingen. Thus, one of the region’s prominent tourist attractions is returning to the list of tourism offerings on the lake.
