Krailling municipality Builds Crematorium to Meet Rising Demand for Cremations

Krailling – Twenty-six years ago, the municipality developed the area now known as the Kraillinger Innovations Meile (KIM), with the goal of providing space for companies to grow and creating new jobs.

Now, the municipality and Novum Projekt 1 GmbH are writing the next chapter of this story together: the construction of a modern crematorium, which is to be implemented by the shareholders—the experienced funeral companies Ahorn Gruppe and Zirngibl Bestattungen. “Zirngibl actually approached us a few years ago to discuss such a project. However, we didn’t have a suitable plot of land at the time,” explained Krailling’s Mayor, Rudolph Haux, at the official press event.

An increasing diversity of funeral forms characterizes the funeral industry today: alongside traditional burials and cremations, options such as tree burials, sea burials, or other forms are being chosen. These developments are contributing significantly to the growing proportion of cremations. In Bavaria, this proportion has risen sharply in recent years, increasing by eight percentage points from 69% to 77% between 2019 and 2023 alone. Valentin Zirngibl, a shareholder of Novum 1 Projekt GmbH and managing director of Zirngibl Bestattungen, is looking forward to the project. As the fourth-generation leader of the local family business, he knows the long distances that sometimes must be driven for a cremation to take place. “The Five-Lakes Region is our home, our roots are here. It makes me proud that we, together with our partner, are realizing a crematorium in our region.”

Developer Tobias Zimmermann, Managing Director of Novum 1 Projekt GmbH and Board Member for Corporate Development and Finance of the Ahorn Gruppe, emphasized the project’s importance: “With our own crematorium, we want to respond to the growing demand for cremations in a forward-looking and sustainable manner. We consciously chose the KIM location because it offers ideal conditions for achieving short travel distances for our nearby funeral homes and for independently realizing our high-quality standards right through to the cremation process. For the new building on the 3,000-square-meter property, we are relying on modern and sustainable construction and operational methods that are environmentally friendly and conserve resources.” The GmbH is investing ten million euros for this purpose.

The municipality welcomes the plans for the crematorium: “The Ahorn Gruppe, in cooperation with the locally-based company Zirngibl, fully met the selection criteria set by the municipality for choosing the companies to which we sell our land. For us, this sets the course for a long-term and successful establishment in Krailling,” Haux explained.

Together with the municipality, the project partners aim to create a location that is economically successful, combines ecological responsibility with a cooperative partnership, and thus helps to sustainably shape Krailling’s future. At the same time, it is intended to set a benchmark for contemporary funeral culture.

The crematorium will consist of two incineration units, which from 2027 onwards will be able to perform 40 cremations daily. Fourteen employees are to be hired at the location in the future.

An open day is also planned, allowing citizens to view the new crematorium.
