The 31-year-old England international is widely reported to be in advanced talks with Ligue 1 side AS Monaco.
Speaking ahead of Bayern’s Bundesliga clash with RB Leipzig, Freund revealed that recent discussions about extending Dier’s contract had ultimately led to the player informing club officials of his decision to move on. Despite Bayern offering him a new deal for two more years, Dier declined and made it clear he would not renew his contract, which expires on June 30.
Freund acknowledged that the decision had not been an easy one for either party. He said Bayern respected Dier’s choice to pursue a new opportunity, likely one offering greater long-term stability. The club accepted his decision and confirmed it as final.
Free Transfer to Monaco Appears Likely
Multiple media outlets have linked Dier with AS Monaco, where he is reportedly set to sign a longer-term contract. With his contract expiring this summer, he will be available on a free transfer. Whether Dier will be included in Bayern’s squad for the FIFA Club World Cup, scheduled from June 14 to July 13, remains undecided, according to Freund.
Dier joined Bayern in January 2024 from Tottenham Hotspur and quickly established himself as a consistent performer in central defense. Injuries to key defenders, including Dayot Upamecano, allowed Dier to step into a more prominent role, earning him a spot in the starting eleven under coach Thomas Tuchel. Since arriving in Munich, he has made 43 competitive appearances and scored twice.
No Current Interest in Jonathan Tah, Says Freund
Despite ongoing speculation linking German international Jonathan Tah with a move to Bayern—especially in light of Dier’s confirmed exit—Freund firmly dismissed the rumors. Although Tah is expected to leave Bayer Leverkusen at the end of the season, Bayern have not entered into any negotiations with him.
Freund emphasized the club’s focus on completing the current season before making any transfer decisions. Bayern’s defense has endured numerous injuries this season, including long-term absences for Hiroki Ito and Upamecano. Nevertheless, the sporting director expressed satisfaction with the team’s defensive performance, highlighting that the club had conceded only 29 goals so far, making it the best in the Bundesliga. The goal, he added, is to build on that defensive solidity moving forward.
