Police are warning of increased caution after several cases of fraud involving offenders who ask for a piece of paper and a pen under false pretenses.
The scam first appeared in Munich this week, and police have already confirmed three cases. The Munich Police Headquarters are warning the public about this so-called “note trick,” carried out directly at people’s front doors.
On Thursday, August 21, an elderly woman over 80 in Berg am Laim became a victim. Around 3:00 p.m., her doorbell rang. A woman with a Southern European appearance asked if she could borrow a piece of paper and a pen to leave a note for a neighbor. The senior let her inside, unaware that a second perpetrator slipped in unnoticed. This accomplice stole a suitcase containing jewelry worth several thousand euros. Police are asking witnesses for information: Anyone who observed suspicious activity near Berg-am-Laim-Straße should call 089/29100.
Attempted Fraud in Schwabing – Suspects Flee
Later that same day, around 5:30 p.m., another attempted fraud occurred on Leonhard-Frank-Straße in Schwabing. This time, the plan failed when two women fled before they could steal anything. The victim, again an elderly woman over 80, heard unusual noises inside her apartment. When she went to check, she suddenly encountered two strangers. Witnesses described the suspects as having an Eastern European appearance. Investigators from Police Precinct 55 are now requesting information from the public regarding suspicious activity in the areas of Leonhard-Frank-Straße, Schleißheimer Straße, and Hiltensperger Straße. Information can be reported by phone at 089/29100.
First Case Reported in Moosach on Monday
The first incident occurred on Monday, August 18, in Moosach. At around 10:30 a.m. on Weißenböckstraße, an elderly woman was approached by a man at her door. He not only asked for paper and a pen but also requested her help with writing. While dictating a text, he seized the opportunity to steal several hundred euros in cash.
