Here’s when, where, and how to book the e-buses:
Munich – On-demand buses are expected to bring greater comfort, high availability, and increased flexibility to Munich’s public transport system. According to a press release from the Munich SPD, the service has now been approved. It is scheduled to launch in January 2026 in the districts of Allach and Freiham.
On-Demand Bus Service Approved for Munich: Start Date, Locations & Booking Details
“With this new service, we are establishing the foundational pillars of a more comprehensive mobility offering for Munich residents,” says Andreas Schuster, SPD spokesperson on the mobility committee.
The plan is to supplement existing fixed-route and scheduled public transport services—such as S-Bahn, U-Bahn, trams, and buses—with fully electric minibuses that can be booked on-demand via an app. According to the SPD parliamentary group, the goal is to enable residents to summon a bus whenever it is needed.
The new buses are intended to particularly benefit less densely populated areas, bridging the gap between fixed-route public transport and private car usage. They will offer flexible and affordable travel options for older adults, people without cars, and individuals with limited mobility.
Initial Service with Drivers – Transition to Autonomous Driving Planned
According to the SPD, operations will begin in early 2026 in Freiham and Allach. Although the service will initially employ drivers, preparations for autonomous operation are already underway. The shift to autonomous driving is expected to reduce public transport operating costs and free up resources for further improvements to the network.
