According to the Munich Transport Company (MVG), all escalators in the city’s subway stations have been out of service since the early hours of August 16 after a lightning strike damaged their control systems.
Current Situation & Alternatives
Despite the escalator outage, subway services remain operational. The MVG reassures passengers: “All station elevators are functioning properly.” Riders are advised to use available lifts or stairs instead. However, the situation may pose challenges for passengers with limited mobility or families with strollers.
Repairs Underway
MVG technicians are working urgently to resolve the issue. “We’re doing everything possible to restore normal operations as quickly as possible,” an MVG spokesperson said. Repairs are expected to be completed by 8 PM on Saturday, though delays may occur depending on progress.
Cause of the Disruption
A powerful thunderstorm swept through Munich and surrounding areas overnight, with at least one lightning strike hitting the subway’s technical infrastructure, triggering the widespread failure. While such lightning-related damage is rare, it’s not unheard of during severe summer storms.
The MVG asks passengers for patience and recommends allowing extra travel time. Updates on repair progress are being posted on the MVG website and social media.
