Mini Air Conditioners from Online Ads Turn Out to Be Ordinary Overpriced Fans

Hot nights cause people to lose patience and buy the first thing that promises a quick escape from the stifling heat. It is precisely on this specific feature of the summer season that the advertising of compact "air conditioners" is built, which is currently running en masse on social networks, YouTube, and in online publications.

German consumer advice centers have examined such offers and arrived at a harsh conclusion: under the guise of a high-tech novelty, buyers are being sold ordinary fans or fan heaters without refrigerant.

Physics vs. Advertising Promises

A real air conditioner is designed to vent heat from a room to the outside. Devices advertised as “mini air conditioners” are physically incapable of this—they simply lack the corresponding mechanism.

The only effect they create is a slight movement of air near the appliance’s grille. This can provide a moment of refreshment if you sit directly in front of the device, but it is unable to cool an entire room.

Overpricing by Tens of Times

The difference between the purchase price and the cost to the end consumer in such stores reaches several hundred percent. Consumer advice centers provide specific examples:

  • an appliance that costs around five euros in Chinese wholesale is sold in German online stores for 60–70 euros;
  • another device is purchased for approximately twelve euros and listed on the ordering website for nearly 138 euros.

Hidden costs are often added to the inflated price: delivery charges or a paid subscription that only surface at the final step of the checkout process, without an explicit warning to the buyer. Under German law, this constitutes a violation of consumer rights.

How the Advertising Scheme Works

The advertisements are professionally made and designed to inspire trust. The websites to which the advertising links lead are often styled as independent platforms featuring product reviews and tests, though in reality, they sell a specific product.

A disclosure about the promotional nature of the page is usually present, but printed in such a small font that it is easy to miss. The phrasing within the advertisements themselves should also raise suspicion:

  • a promise to cool a room “in 90 seconds”;
  • claims of reducing energy consumption by 90% compared to a conventional air conditioner;
  • references to a certain “NASA technology” without any supporting documentation.

Not a single one of these assertions withstands basic scrutiny.

What to Do for Those Who Have Already Placed an Order

For such purchases, a standard fourteen-day right of withdrawal applies. However, if the deadline has passed or the seller is unresponsive, there are other ways to get a refund.

When paying by card, you should immediately contact your bank to initiate a chargeback procedure—disputing the payment. When paying by bank transfer, you must contact the bank directly just as quickly. If the order was made through a marketplace, the claim should be directed to the platform operator.

It is crucial from the very beginning to clearly state the core of the complaint: this is not about the poor quality of the product, but about a deliberately false description of its properties. Buyer protection systems often do not respond to quality disputes, but they are obliged to consider cases of outright misrepresentation.

Verification Before Purchasing

Before ordering a product from an unfamiliar store, you can verify the seller for free using the Fakeshop-Finder provided by German consumer advice centers. The service helps evaluate how trustworthy a store is even before payment.

Summer heat will pass, but the financial losses from such purchases will not. Reading the fine print carefully and verifying the actual specifications of a product remains the most reliable way to avoid being left without both your money and the cool air.
