Erding Replaces New Year’s Fireworks with Laser Show to Protect Residents and Historic Sites

The use of pyrotechnics has been banned in central Erding for New Year’s Eve. Instead, a laser show will take place at Schrannenplatz. In the past, the city has repeatedly faced dangerous situations involving fireworks.

There will be no pyrotechnics in the city center: Erding authorities have issued a special general decree prohibiting the possession and launching of pyrotechnic items, including rockets, firecrackers, and battery displays, on New Year’s Eve. As an alternative to traditional fireworks, a light performance will be held at Schrannenplatz. In collaboration with the Tanzwelt Erding dance studio, New Year’s dancing will also be organized there starting at 11:00 PM.

The ban on pyrotechnics applies to the area bounded by Am Herzoggraben and Am Mühlgraben. This zone includes Haager Straße (from the intersection with Bachingerstraße), Landshuter Straße, Friedrich-Fischer-Straße, Lange Zeile, Schrannenplatz, Kleiner Platz, and all adjacent alleys. Furthermore, the city administration announced that fireworks are also prohibited near the Fischer Nursing Home on Haager Straße, the Holy Spirit Almshouse on Hiasl-Maier-Straße, the Pichlmayr Senior Center on Sigwolfstraße, and the Erding District Hospital.

In previous years, dangerous situations regularly occurred in the city center due to the careless handling of pyrotechnics, often involving individuals under the influence of alcohol. In one specific instance, emergency service personnel came under fire from firecrackers while performing their duties. Additionally, the improper use of fireworks could easily cause fires. The historic half-timbered buildings in the Old Town, which are protected as architectural monuments, were at particularly high risk.

In an official statement, authorities noted that this ban represents only a minor interference with general freedom of action; therefore, it is deemed proportionate and does not excessively restrict the rights of visitors.
