Detour Bans During Traffic Jams Now Also in Berchtesgadener Land District

The district of Berchtesgadener Land has now also prohibited drivers from leaving the highway during traffic jams.

The district office announced the decision today. Since mid-August, such bans have already been in place in the Rosenheim district.

Effective immediately, drivers are no longer allowed to exit the A8 highway in the municipalities of Teisendorf, Anger, and Piding on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays, according to the district office in Bad Reichenhall.

Relief for residents

The aim is to ease the burden on residents in the affected towns, who suffer from heavy congestion caused by rerouted traffic whenever there is a jam on the highway. The restriction applies exclusively to vehicles attempting to bypass a traffic jam to save time.

Navigation service providers have been informed, meaning GPS devices will now warn drivers to remain on the highway in case of congestion.

Rosenheim district introduced the ban earlier

The rules in Berchtesgadener Land mirror those in Rosenheim, where the policy has been in effect since mid-August. In Rosenheim, bans apply to eight exits along the A8 and two along the A93. These routes, toward Salzburg and Kufstein, are major travel corridors to Austria, Italy, and Croatia.

The detour bans aim to protect towns like Aschau, Bad Aibling, Bad Feilnbach, Rohrdorf, Rosenheim, and Samerberg, which have been heavily impacted by rerouted traffic. Police warn that violations can result in a €50 fine. The Rosenheim measures were the first of their kind in Germany, while Austria’s Tyrol region has enforced such bans for years.
