2026 is likely to be a year of major construction sites for the railway company. At Laim station next year, the old platform is to be demolished. Therefore, presumably from June 1st until 2028, the S3, S4, S6, and S8 lines towards the city center will no longer be able to stop at Laim. Passengers coming from Pasing can use the S5 line as an alternative or take any other S-Bahn to Hirschgarten and from there return to Laim, the railway company reports in a preliminary overview of construction works.
Main Line to Be Closed Repeatedly
Furthermore, a whole series of restrictions on the main line and on outer S-Bahn sections are expected. It will begin between April 1st and 12th: due to the replacement of switches near Isartor and construction work for the second trunk line, S-Bahn traffic between the Main Station/Stachus and East Station will be impossible. So-called “maintenance weekends” with closures of the entire main line and S-Bahn tracks at East Station will take place from May 8th to 11th and from October 16th to 19th.
From June to November, multi-week closures are also anticipated for the S6 and S8 lines in June, August, and October/November due to the construction of an “overpass junction” at Westkreuz, as well as on some weekends. Additionally, the railway company is already warning that construction work for the second trunk line in Laim, at East Station, and on Leuchtenbergring will take place “throughout the year on many nights, as well as on weekends and holidays.”
For passengers heading west, there is another bitter pill to swallow: due to numerous speed-restricted sections, repairs are planned for the Munich-Pasing to Grafing railway line in 2026, as well as from Geltendorf to Kaufering. This will impact train services. Trains will only be able to run at reduced speed, so significant timetable changes will occur from February 7th to October 31st next year. For instance, regional trains RB68 (Füssen–Munich) and RB74 (Buchloe–Munich) will be shortened and will start or end their journey in Munich-Pasing instead of running as usual to the Main Station. Passengers on regional express lines from/to Kempten, Lindau, and Memmingen should prepare for increased travel times and departures from Munich 20 minutes earlier. The Eurocity service between Munich and Zurich, which already suffers from frequent delays, will not escape changes either: its travel time will increase by 10 minutes, plus departures from Munich will be five minutes earlier.
Largest Construction Projects in Bavaria
Passengers on the S4/S20 lines, in addition to all the other issues, will have to cope with these restrictions. Hourly trains will terminate their journey early at Buchenau (instead of Geltendorf). During peak hours, trains between Buchenau and Geltendorf will be canceled. The S20 line will only operate between Höllriegelskreuth and Munich-Pasing.
The railway company has announced the organization of replacement bus services. However, the last time these ran between the Main Station and Pasing, they performed poorly.
