In March and April, Bavaria‘s main air hub will be inaccessible via the usual S-Bahn trains for several days. These large-scale inconveniences are caused by construction work to modernize the railway infrastructure, affecting thousands of tourists and city residents. As informed by the Munich suburban rail administration, significant changes to the timetable will take effect, turning the journey to the terminals into a true test of vigilance.
Reconstruction for stability: why both lines are closed
The first phase of restrictions begins this Thursday, March 19, 2026, at 9:30 PM and will last until 5:00 AM on Monday, March 23. During this period, the airport will be completely cut off from the S1 and S8 lines. The simultaneous closure of both branches, which is usually avoided, has become a necessary measure this time. The entire complex of work is concentrated directly on the airport grounds.
A railway spokesperson explained that a new electronic interlocking station will be built at the site by the end of the year. This project is part of the large-scale Erdinger Ringschluss program. The new system will replace the outdated relay interlocking, which has recently been a frequent cause of technical failures. It is expected that once the modernization is complete, train movements will become significantly more stable. However, passengers must pay for this future reliability with their time now. In addition to the March closure, a similar situation will repeat in April: train service will be suspended from Monday evening, April 13 (10:10 PM) until Friday early morning, April 17 (5:00 AM).
Alternative routes: buses instead of trains
For those who need to reach their flight or head home after landing on these dates, a compensation transport scheme has been prepared. While the trains are absent, special buses will operate, connecting the airport with the nearest functional railway hubs.
The traffic pattern will be as follows:
- For S1 passengers, rail replacement buses are organized between Neufahrn station and the airport.
- Those using the RE 22 regional express will have to transfer to a bus in the city of Freising.
- For the S8 line, the transfer point will be Ismaning station, from where shuttle service to the terminals will be established.
Passengers are strongly advised to allow significantly more travel time than usual. Bus service depends directly on road conditions, and travel time may increase substantially.
