The incident occurred on June 7 in the early hours as a 46-year-old driver from the Bamberg district lost control of his newly purchased BMW while navigating a curve on the rain-slicked road near the Starnberg interchange, heading toward Garmisch-Partenkirchen. The wet asphalt turned the highway into a dangerously slippery surface, contributing to the crash.
The aftermath of the accident was dramatic. Twisted wreckage and damaged parts of the car were scattered across several hundred metres, and sections of the roadside guardrails were severely deformed by the force of the impact.
Both the driver and his 44-year-old partner from Potsdam sustained only minor injuries. They received immediate treatment at the scene and were transported to a nearby hospital for further care.
The vehicle itself was completely destroyed. The luxury BMW was damaged beyond recognition, with police unable to identify the exact model due to the extent of the destruction. “The car was barely recognizable as a vehicle,” said a visibly shaken officer from the Weilheim traffic police. The estimated value loss is at least €70,000.
The crash also damaged eleven segments of guardrails along the highway, with initial repair costs estimated at approximately €4,000.
As a result of the accident, the A95 was closed in the direction of Garmisch for about 45 minutes to allow emergency crews to manage the scene. Traffic was diverted at the Starnberg junction. Once debris clearance was underway, vehicles were allowed to pass slowly along the shoulder.
A large contingent of emergency services responded, including units from the Weilheim traffic police and volunteer fire brigades from Starnberg, Wangen, Neuried, Neufahrn, and Berg. Firefighters secured the site, assisted with accident documentation, and cleaned the roadway, which was strewn with metal shards and car parts, to prevent further incidents.
The incident serves as a sobering reminder of the dangers of speeding on wet roads, particularly during the busy holiday travel season.
