Brewery Faces Backlash Over Video Accused of Trivializing Violence Against Women

Пивоваренная компания Erdinger Weißbräu оказалась в центре скандала после публикации видеоролика на Instagram, который пользователи сочли оскорбительным и неуважительным к теме насилия в отношении женщин.

The brewery has since removed the video and issued a public apology.

Erdinger’s Hiring Campaign Sparks Controversy on Social Media

In an effort to address staffing shortages and attract younger applicants, Erdinger Weißbräu turned to social media to promote job openings in its sales department. The brewery’s Instagram video was intended to be humorous—but it quickly drew ire for its disturbing visual implications and perceived sexist overtones.

Depiction of Woman Under Pressure Draws Fire

The video featured a young woman wearing a safety vest bearing the Erdinger logo, standing in a brewery setting and reading job perks from a tablet. Four hands entered the frame holding brewery-related objects—a beer tap, bottle opener, beer bottle, and wooden mallet—framing her face. As the woman’s enthusiasm faded, the objects appeared to symbolically strike toward her, prompting criticism for evoking imagery of intimidation and potential violence.

Critics Link Video to Broader Issues of Gender Violence

Among the strongest reactions came from the activist platform “Safe Space Chemnitz,” which released a commentary video highlighting the problematic symbolism. The speaker pointed out the tone-deafness of the campaign given the prevalence of domestic violence and femicides: “Every day, women are subjected to domestic abuse. Nearly every day, a man commits a femicide. And yet companies like Erdinger seem to ignore or exploit this for publicity.” Their video has been viewed over 44,000 times and widely shared, fueling the online uproar.

Erdinger Responds to Allegations of Sexism

In a statement to Bavarian Broadcasting (BR), an Erdinger spokesperson acknowledged the backlash and said the company did not intend to cause harm or offense. The video, developed in-house, was meant to be satirical and light-hearted, the spokesperson explained. “We were hoping for a positive response—otherwise we never would have published it.” Given the unexpected criticism and out of respect for those who felt attacked, the video was deleted from all platforms.

Mixed Reactions Highlight Divide in Public Response

Despite the controversy, the company noted that some viewers reacted positively to the campaign. However, the negative reactions significantly outweighed the intended humor, leading Erdinger to reflect on its messaging strategy.

Company Promises Greater Sensitivity in Future Content

Erdinger has pledged to adopt a more careful approach in future digital campaigns, particularly when dealing with socially sensitive topics. The company acknowledged that the experience underscored the importance of thoroughly reviewing public-facing content to avoid misinterpretation or harm.

As public pressure on corporate responsibility continues to grow, the incident serves as a reminder of the fine line between satire and insensitivity—especially in a digital age where public feedback is swift and unfiltered.
