Suspected Thieves Arrested After Assaulting Police Officers During Theft Incident at the Isar

A summer afternoon by the Isar River ended behind bars for two suspected thieves on Sunday. Police arrested a 35-year-old German man and a 34-year-old Greek woman, both without permanent residence, following the theft of a backpack and a subsequent altercation in which two police officers were injured.

At around 5:45 p.m., a 27-year-old man from Munich alerted the police after he was robbed while swimming. Upon returning to his spot on the riverbank, he discovered that his backpack, including his smartphone and wallet, was missing. His companion managed to locate the stolen phone nearby using a tracking app. When the victim confronted the suspected thieves, they refused to cooperate, prompting him to call emergency services.

Upon realizing that the police had been notified, the suspects attempted to flee. Witnesses managed to restrain the 35-year-old man until officers arrived. He fiercely resisted arrest, attacking the officers and forcing them to subdue him with pepper spray and physical force.

Meanwhile, his 34-year-old companion tried to profit from the theft. According to police, she had already attempted to make purchases using the victim’s stolen credit cards. However, officers were able to quickly determine her location and arrested her as well.

Both suspects were taken into custody. Due to the effects of the pepper spray, the male suspect required medical treatment at the scene from emergency services. During a background check, police discovered that an arrest warrant for a similar offense was already outstanding against him.

A judge will now decide whether the two suspects will remain in pretrial detention.
