Lower Speed Limits to Improve Safety Around Renovated Park Area
The redesign of the Alter Botanischer Garten in recent months has led to significant improvements. Alongside enhanced safety and expanded food and beverage offerings, the area now features upgraded sports and recreation facilities. As a result, the increase in foot traffic—especially near the newly established playground and sports area on Karl-Stützel-Platz—prompted the city’s Department of Mobility to introduce lasting traffic calming measures to protect pedestrians.
Streets Affected by the New Speed Regulations
Effective immediately, vehicles traveling west on Elisenstraße along the Alter Botanischer Garten must now observe a speed limit of 30 kilometers per hour. In addition, the section of Luisenstraße between Elisenstraße and Karlstraße—where a temporary speed limit had previously been in place—has now been permanently restricted to 30 kilometers per hour. According to the city, the aim is to “significantly improve traffic safety around the newly developed playground and sports area.”
From Troubled Spot to Model Urban Space
Just one year ago, the area around the Alter Botanischer Garten was known as a social trouble spot. That reputation has changed dramatically. Comprehensive renovations and a focus on community use have turned the park into a lively public gathering space. The transformation has been praised by several public figures. Uli Hoeneß, honorary president of FC Bayern Munich, visited the park during the opening of a new small football pitch and expressed his admiration for the revitalized space.

In tandem with the city’s urban and traffic planning initiatives, nearby businesses are also adapting to the changing environment. Chris Lehner, operator of the traditional Park Café near the Neptun Fountain, has revamped his event programming. The focus now lies on more relaxed and low-key offerings that reflect the new character of the area. Visitors can look forward to a diverse yet quieter schedule of events that aligns with the transformed park’s tranquil atmosphere.
