Freiham — A park roughly the size of Westpark, featuring numerous sports installations and a swimming lake: this is the future vision for Freiham Landscape Park. The City Council’s Construction Committee reached a decision on the structural concept this Tuesday.
Structural Concept for Munich’s New Landscape Park Approved
In December 2024, the department decided against adopting a single master plan that might not have seen completion for many years. Instead, the work has been divided into six distinct phases.
The overarching structural concept ensures that the final park will have a harmonious appearance. This document defines the primary routes, as well as locations for bodies of water, catering facilities, and noise protection structures.
Swimming Lake, Sports Zones, and Walking Trails Planned for West Freiham
According to the plans, a new swimming lake in Freiham will be located in the south, featuring an L-shape and covering an area of just over 5.5 hectares. Catering facilities are also planned for this area.
Furthermore, the possibility of creating a second, slightly smaller body of water in the northern part of the park was acknowledged. However, for that site to be suitable for swimming, additional sealing of the lakebed would be required. Both potential locations will now be studied in greater detail. In the north, the creation of a new allotment garden association with approximately 150 plots and its own restaurant was also deemed feasible.
The structural concept further outlines the primary pedestrian and bicycle connections within the new park, including a central north-south path. Two or three locations for kiosks have been designated across the park area.
Noise protection along the A99 motorway—which, to the dissatisfaction of many local politicians, will reduce the total area of the park—is to be provided, at least in some sections, by an earthen embankment topped with a path. This vantage point is intended to offer a clear view across the entire landscape park.
First Construction Phase of Freiham Landscape Park Scheduled for 2027
Initial work is set to begin in 2027 in the southernmost section of the park. In the area between Bodenseestraße and Birnbaumweg, west of the Freiham Sports Park, plans include the installation of table tennis tables as well as zones for bouldering, parkour, and pickleball. Additionally, a relaxation area with benches, hammocks, and a boules court is planned.
“The full development of the park will extend well into the 2030s, due to the local construction site on the motorway and the need to finalize planning for the U-Bahn extension,” explained Paul Bickelbacher, the construction policy spokesperson for the Green/Pink List/Volt faction. According to the plan, the final phase of work is scheduled to begin in 2040.
