Oktoberfest is not just about rivers of selected beer and traditional costumes, but also that unique energy provided by music in the huge festival tents. To give this long-standing tradition a fresh, modern impulse, Munich has re-launched the contest for talented artists from all over Bavaria. The application period will last until the end of April, offering a unique chance for authors to permanently write their names into the history of the legendary Wiesn. According to the city administration, following last year’s overwhelming success, this format has been made permanent.
Munich seeks a new hit: applications start on March 26
“In 2026, the state capital Munich is again looking for that specific Oktoberfest song that embodies our regional musical mastery, evokes sincere positive emotions, and fits perfectly into the relaxed, boozy atmosphere of the holiday,” emphasized the Labor and Economic Affairs Referent and Oktoberfest Director, Dr. Christian Scharpf. The official stage for submitting creative works begins on March 26. For an entire month, until April 26, an original track can be uploaded to a special digital contest portal by artists and musical groups from Bavaria, as well as bordering regions.
Strict but fair requirements are set for the works, as the future hit will be heard by millions of guests in the beer tents. The contest composition must be suitable for an energetic live performance on stage, have an undeniable connection to Bavaria or the Bavarian dialect, and be recorded at a high professional level. There is no place here for amateur sketches—the city expects a high-quality, mature product capable of instantly energizing a crowd of thousands raising heavy beer mugs. Subsequently, a detailed selection will be conducted and every submitted piece evaluated by a special expert commission consisting of recognized industry masters. In addition to the melody, the jury will consider the song’s potential to become a true anthem that people will want to sing in chorus.
Public voting to decide the winner’s fate
The most intriguing stage of the contest begins in the summer: the best compositions that pass the expert filter will be available for public online voting starting June 1. Until June 28, a vote can be cast for a favorite by every connoisseur of beer culture and music lover, which will effectively determine the fate of the festival’s future anthem. The winner’s name will be solemnly announced on August 1 on the main stage of the famous Brass Wiesn festival in Eching. The winning group will receive not only the honorary title but also powerful information support to promote their work on the country’s largest media platforms. The contest producers have promised that the winning song will enter wide rotation even before the official opening of the first barrel in September.
This year’s musical marathon is held in close partnership with giants such as the Antenne Bayern radio station, the Brass Wiesn festival, the Association of Munich Breweries, and the Oktoberfest Tent Hosts Association. Such a constellation of organizers guarantees that the winning song will sound from every speaker during the festival. Wolfgang Köbele, founder of the legendary Münchner Zwietracht orchestra, acted as the technical consultant for the project, and last year’s winner Michael Fenzl became the contest ambassador. His example clearly proves that new Bavarian music is capable of becoming the true voice of the holiday and uniting thousands of people in a single impulse of joy.Source: Munich City Hall Press Release
