Overhead Line Damage Disrupts Munich S-Bahn Services

The morning of Friday, 17 April, began with a large-scale transport collapse for residents in Munich’s eastern districts.

A technical fault on the suburban railway line (S-Bahn) resulted in the paralysis of traffic on key routes. The incident escalated significantly when a passenger train became stranded on the tracks between stations, requiring the swift intervention of the Federal Police and railway emergency services. To establish the exact cause and assess the extent of the damage, law enforcement authorities were compelled to deploy aviation assets.

The situation unfolded in the early hours when a break in the overhead contact wire was recorded on the railway branch in the eastern part of the city. As the nature of the damage did not allow for the exclusion of external interference, numerous police units and emergency management specialists arrived at the scene. While the train, stuck on the tracks between Sankt-Martin-Straße and Giesing, awaited evacuation, operational teams conducted a detailed inspection of the permanent way. A particularly vital role in the operation was played by a Federal Police helicopter crew, which performed several flyovers of the accident site to coordinate ground forces and conduct aerial surveillance.

Technical units from Deutsche Bahn commenced restoration work immediately. According to official forecasts from the railway company, full restoration of the power supply to the line and a return to the standard timetable are expected by 11:00. However, until that time, the load on the city’s transport system will remain elevated, requiring passengers to utilise alternative routes.

Rail Replacement Services and Timetable Changes

To minimise the impact of the disruption, the transport operator has organised a rail replacement service (Schienenersatzverkehr). Buses and minibuses have been deployed on the most critical sections. According to current data from Deutsche Bahn, temporary routes connect Deisenhofen and Ostbahnhof, as well as Perlach and Ostbahnhof. Passengers are strongly advised to check vehicle markings—only those with the specific “Ersatzverkehr” designation should be used.

Currently, substantial adjustments have been made to the traffic scheme, affecting several key lines:

  • S3 trains are operating exclusively on the sections Mammendorf – Ostbahnhof and Holzkirchen – Deisenhofen.
  • S5 trains are running only on the sections Kreuzstraße – Perlach and Pasing – Ostbahnhof.
  • Additional S3 services, which usually provide 10-minute intervals on the Maisach – Deisenhofen route, have been temporarily withdrawn from operation.
  • Traffic on the main line (Stammstrecke) is currently operating as scheduled without significant restrictions.

Large-scale disruptions during the morning rush hour have once again highlighted the issue of infrastructure wear and tear within the Munich transport hub. While emergency crews complete the installation of the overhead line, experts are analysing data from the aerial inspection. Following the completion of repairs and the restoration of power to the line, some time will be required to stabilise service intervals and return all trains to their schedules. It is expected that the consequences of the morning incident will be fully resolved in the afternoon; however, passengers are recommended to check the status of their journeys in advance via the carrier’s mobile applications.
