Reconstruction of Munich Pedestrian Bridge to Trigger Closures on the Middle Ring

Munich’s transport infrastructure will shortly face planned restrictions requiring drivers to exercise increased caution and plan their routes well in advance.

The city’s Building Department is continuing the comprehensive reconstruction of the pedestrian bridge over Schenkendorfstraße in the Schwabing-Freimann district. The works, which commenced in late March, are entering a new phase necessitated by the complete cessation of traffic on one of the city’s primary transport arteries—the Middle Ring (Mittlerer Ring).

The necessity for nocturnal closures stems from the complexity of the engineering tasks and safety requirements during high-altitude works over the carriageway. According to the city administration, the restrictions will affect the eastbound direction of the highway and will be short-term but systematic in nature to minimise the impact on daytime traffic.

Bridge Repairs to Close Sections of the Middle Ring

According to the approved schedule, from Monday, 20 April, to Wednesday, 22 April, the Middle Ring will be completely closed to eastbound traffic during the night—from 22:00 to 05:00. During this period, the exit from the Munich-Schwabing motorway onto the Middle Ring heading east will also be blocked, and access to the southern Petueltunnel will be restricted.

To prevent congestion, municipal services have developed a system of diversion routes:

  • Traffic arriving from the motorway will be redirected from the Munich-Frankfurter Ring exit via Föhringer Ring towards Effnerplatz.
  • Vehicles travelling directly on the Middle Ring will be guided via Frankfurter Ring and Ungererstraße for a subsequent return to the orbital highway.

It should be noted that these measures are a mandatory part of the city’s large-scale bridge renewal programme. While for motorists the primary inconvenience is limited to a few nights, the situation remains more complex for pedestrians: the bridge over Schenkendorfstraße itself will remain unavailable for use for several more months until the total completion of construction and assembly works.

In conclusion, the city administration urges road users to strictly follow the instructions of temporary road signs and to account for possible delays when planning night-time journeys. The completion of this reconstruction stage will ensure the long-term operational reliability of the structure and the safety of both pedestrians and drivers who cross this busy section of Schwabing daily.
