The city provides numerous opportunities for the disposal of used Christmas trees. Starting in January, the Munich Waste Management Corporation (AWM) is offering citizens temporary collection points throughout the city, in addition to the eleven permanent recycling centers. This ensures that free tree disposal is available to everyone across the municipality.
Trees Must Be Free of Decorations and Plastic
Tree collection at public sites will run continuously from January 7 to February 4. Citizens were also able to leave trees at specific schools and kindergartens, but only on selected dates: from January 7 to 9, as well as on January 12 and 13, between 8:00 AM and 5:00 PM. For those unsure of the nearest drop-off location, a search tool is available at site.
To ensure proper recycling, trees must be completely cleared of all decorations and any plastic elements. Trees should not be shredded before drop-off. For property management companies, a special offer is available: if there are at least 20 trees, a paid collection service can be utilized between January 20 and February 28. Information on booking this service is available through the AWM customer service center at 233-96200.
Both the Waste Management Corporation and the Building Department emphasized that disposal must occur exclusively at officially designated collection points. Leaving a tree elsewhere is classified as illegal dumping and will result in administrative proceedings and a fine.
