This was revealed by an analysis from the portal Verivox, the results of which were presented by the newspapers of the Funke Media Group. According to the data, consumers can save an average of 25 percent over 24 months, with savings reaching up to 37 percent in some instances.
The analysis shows that the average savings for separate purchases amounted to 29 percent on the Telekom network, 27 percent on Vodafone, 24 percent on 1&1, and 21 percent on O2.
Significant Savings for Premium and Mid-Range Devices
The largest absolute savings were recorded for the premium iPhone 17 Pro. When paired with a separate, low-cost plan from a discount provider offering an average data volume, the device cost €675 less over 24 months than the equivalent Telekom bundle. The highest percentage-based saving of 37 percent was achieved on the 1&1 network with the mid-range Google Pixel 9a.
“Contract plans from major providers often include about six times more data than the average per capita consumption in Germany,” Jörg Schamberg, a telecommunications expert at Verivox, told the Funke Media Group. “Many customers sign up for excessive plans just to minimize the upfront cost of their desired phone. Consequently, they pay monthly for services they do not actually need,” he emphasized.
Methodology of the Study
For this study, Verivox compared common bundled offers from Telekom, Vodafone, O2, and 1&1 against a combination of a separately purchased device and a discount plan within the same network. The analysis was based on two user profiles: mid-range and premium.
For both profiles, two scenarios were calculated:
- A comparison of bundles with plans of similar capacity.
- A comparison based on a smaller data volume oriented toward actual average consumption.
Verivox used two representative devices for the analysis: the Google Pixel 9a (128 GB) and the Apple iPhone 17 Pro (256 GB), using the manufacturers’ recommended retail prices in each case. All costs were calculated over a 24-month period. The data was accurate as of November 25, 2025; short-term promotional offers were not included, and daily price fluctuations may occur.
