Statewide English Test for Bavarian Gymnasiums Canceled

A statewide English test for Gymnasiums (academic secondary schools) in Bavaria has been canceled: According to the Ministry of Education, the test questions for the 10th-grade standardized assessment were accidentally disclosed at one school. 30,000 students were supposed to take the test on Monday.

Approximately 30,000 tenth-grade students at Bavarian Gymnasiums were originally scheduled to take a graded standardized English test on Monday. However, the test was canceled at short notice, as a spokesperson for the Ministry of Education told Bavarian Broadcasting (BR).

The test questions had previously been accidentally disclosed at one school. The spokesperson described it as a very “regrettable” incident. “Because of this, equal treatment could no longer be guaranteed.” This is because the questions for the standardized assessment are the same across Bavaria.

Test Will Not Be Rescheduled

According to the spokesperson, the test will not be rescheduled. However, schools will have the option to voluntarily administer an English standardized test in June. The spokesperson did not want to say how the questions were disclosed, nor did they name the school involved. They stated that they were not aware of a comparable previous case. The Mediengruppe Bayern first reported on the cancellation.

Standardized Tests in Several Subjects

In Bavaria, students at secondary schools take uniform standardized tests at the beginning of the school year in specific grades for subjects like German, Mathematics, English, or Latin. According to the Ministry of Education, they are a “valuable orientation aid” for students, parents, and teachers. The comparative tests are intended to “provide indications of specific strengths and weaknesses of the learners against the background of the results achieved statewide.”

All other upcoming standardized tests will take place as planned. For example, the English standardized test for 7th-grade Gymnasium students, for whom English is the first foreign language, is scheduled for Wednesday. Seventh-graders at Realschulen (intermediate secondary schools) will write theirs on Tuesday. Tests for specific grade levels in the subjects of German and Mathematics are taking place on Monday.
