The Munich Security Conference (MSC) begins in the Bavarian capital this Friday. Munich Airport serves as the arrival and departure point for heads of state arriving by plane. As airport representatives reported in response to an inquiry, the servicing of special aircraft has been organized in an area closed to the public. From there, national leaders were promptly directed to the city in motorcades straight from the airfield.
Airport officials clarified that passengers in the terminals did not notice these processes. Regular air traffic was carried out without restrictions. Nevertheless, travelers using Lufthansa should have taken into account temporary difficulties caused by a warning strike on Thursday.
Brief Road Closures Possible
Federal Police representatives reported possible traffic disruptions in the vicinity of the airport. Law enforcement officers periodically closed individual access roads for short periods to ensure the unhindered passage of motorcades to or from the event venue.
For air passengers, this means that delays may occur on the way to the airport. Those who need to catch a flight were recommended to plan their time with a margin.
Security Concept Constantly Adjusted
The Federal Police stated that the security plan underwent constant evaluation and was adapted depending on the current situation before and during the conference. However, the agency fundamentally did not provide public comments regarding specific changes compared to the normal operating mode.
In addition to the regular staff, additional Federal Police forces were deployed at the airport during the security conference period. The agency did not provide information regarding the type, number, or composition of these units for reasons of operational tactics.
A Complex Task for the Airport
For the airport operator, the main difficulty was the coordination of special flights. Aircraft must be positioned in such a way as to meet the various requirements of the sending countries. Simultaneously, interference with regular air traffic must not be allowed.
